A powerful 6.1R earthquake has been reported in Taiwan this morning, only 11km NW from Hualian in Taiwan. The maps above show the location of the epicenter. The chart below shows our April calendar for Taiwan, where we can clearly see our prediction, expecting the event tomorrow, so it is slighlty earlier, as often can happen. (note +-1 day is the accuracy of our expectation).
There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities. Taiwan’s Interior Ministry said that it has set up an emergency response center.
All subway service in Taipei was temporarily canceled, Taiwan’s state-run Central News Agency reported.
Local television footage showed school children being evacuated from buildings, while a weather bureau official said Thursday's quake was the largest to hit the island so far this year.
It struck at 1:01pm local time (05:01 GMT) at a depth of 18km.
Taiwan, which sits at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, experiences frequent earthquakes.
