6.6R in Japan


A 6.6R earthquake was reported this evening in Hokkaido Region in Japan.
The quake hit shortly before 3am local time 112km south of Sapporo city on the island of Hokkaido.
It struck at a shallow depth of just 32km.
Japan's disaster management agency FDMA said at least two homes had collapsed in Sapporo and a fire broke out at a petrochemical plant in Muroran City. One person in Tomakomai suffered cardiac arrest.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami.
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido prefecture with a population of nearly two million people. Power outages have been reported across the region.
The earthquake comes just hours after south Japan was battered by Typhoon Jebi.
