Earthquake News and Global Seismic Reports Light earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 58 km east of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Papua New Guinea near Kokopo, Kokopo District, East New Britain Province, only 26 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday 8 December 2020 at 1.52 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 45.1 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kokopo (pop. 26,300) located 58 km from the epicenter, and Rabaul (pop. 8,100) 73 km away.
