Earthquake in Uttarakhand: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 shook Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Tuesday night, reported ANI. Tremors were felt at 8: 52 PM on Tuesday at Joshimath region and no casualties have been reported so far. Even the state administration has not confirmed the epicenter of the earthquake and is reportedly working on gathering information about the same.
The hill state last witnessed a similar earthquake on February 6 which was measured at 5.8 on Richter Scale. Tremors of the earthquake which took place late in evening were also felt in New Delhi and other parts of northern India. According to a report by Indian Express, tremors lasted for nearly 30 seconds and were felt in other states including Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh too.
As per the National Seismological Bureau, the epicenter of the earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude on the Richter Scale was captured to be in Rudraprayag region of Uttarakhand.
Situated in the Himalayan belt, Uttarakhand is known for such high seismic activities. Speaking to PTI, J L Gautam, Operations head at the National Seismological Bureau, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences had said, “The depth of the quake was 33 km and it occurred at 10.33 PM.”
Soon after the earthquake, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that he took stock of the situation and spoke to district magistrates and asked them to submit a ground report at the earliest. “I have spoken to District Magistrate and getting information from various sources through out the state. There is no loss of life but there may be some cracks developed in the houses in far-flung areas. We are still in the process of collecting the information,” PTI had quoted Rawat saying.
