Pidie Jaya Earthquake Damage Likely to Cost Rp 900 Billion


Jakarta. Reconstruction in Pidie Jaya, the district most affected by Wednesday's (07/12) earthquake in Aceh, could cost Rp 900 billion ($67.4 million), the head of Pidie Jaya's public works office said on Saturday.
Over a hundred have been killed and around 700 injured in the 6.4 magnitude earthquake which Pidie, Pidie Jaya and Bireuen districts in Aceh in the early hours of Wednesday. Hundreds of buildings have been destroyed with major damage to much of the region's infrastructure.
"A temporary estimate for budgets needed to rehabilitate the housing of the earthquake victims [in Pidie Jaya alone] is Rp 901.4 billion. We have reported this to the president and ministers," Bahron told reporters as quoted by Antara News agency on Saturday.
Piddie Jaya's eight sub-districts felt the quake and suffered building damage. Bahran said there were 12,560 units and 49 mosques were damaged.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who visited Pidie Jaya on Friday, promised speedy reconstruction efforts, telling reporters the government will establish a scheme to distribute Rp 40 million per household for those who sustained heavy damage and Rp 20 million for those with minor damage.
On the visit he announced the government would be responsible for damaged infrastructure, such as schools and government offices, which would be managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
The president also visited At-Taqurrub Mosque, where many evacuees have sought refuge.
He performed Friday prayers with his entourage in Samalanga subdistrict, accompanied by members of the local community.
Jokowi was accompanied by Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Health Minister Nina Moeloek, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, acting Aceh Governor Sudarmo and National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian during the visit.
