Army explosions spark earthquake fears

Explosions from an army operation on Mount Ruapehu has sparked fears of an earthquake in nearby towns.

The Army has been destroying old munition this week in controlled explosions, causing small rumbles.
Local schools and the Department of Conservation were informed by the Defence Force about its plan, but GNS Science was not.
Brad Scott, a volcanologist at GNS's Taupo office, said the office had received many calls from worried locals.
"It was being recorded on the earthquake sensors, but what the people were feeling was actually the air waves that were generated by the explosions. The most distant report that I'm aware of was someone fishing out on Lake Tarawera."
